Phatic Speech Acts are communication strategy that is a characteristic of a culture. Phatic speech acts have an important role in the communication process in Indonesia as the efforts made to demonstrate social identity and maintain social rapport in society. Therefore, the manifestation of phatic speech acts found in English-speaking Indonesian Students is an interesting topic to discuss. The objectives to be achieved in this research are: (1) Identifying the types of phatic speech acts found in the daily conversations of English-speaking Indonesian Students and (2) Describing the function of phatic speech acts found in the daily conversations of English-speaking Indonesian Students. The data source for this research is English-speaking Indonesian students at Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University, Madiun Campus. This research data was collected by using the non-participation observation method with the recording, note-taking, and role-play techniques. The findings of this research are a classification of 11 types of phatic speech acts consisting of (1) Addressing, (2) Expressing Empathy, (3) Gossiping, (4) Complimenting, (5) Giving Remarks, (6) Advising, (7) Offering, (8) Requesting, (9) Inviting, (10) Mocking, and (11) Swearing. The functions of phatic speech acts are: (1) Expressing hospitality, (2) Showing attention, (3) Making conversation more interesting, (4) Please others, (5) Showing concern, (6) Expressing empathy (7) Showing politeness, (8) Expressing social attachment, (9) Expressing solidarity, (10) Mocking, and (11) Building intimacy. The phatic speech act of addressing is the type of speech act that is most frequently found. On the contrary, the phatic speech act of complimenting is rarely used. The embodiment of the phatic speech act of addressing is dominantly carried out by students in daily conversations since it reflects the cultural identity of Indonesians that is friendly and warm. The phatic speech act of complimenting is not used frequently because of its conditional in nature. The phatic speech act of complimenting requires the speaker to have an advantage that is worthy of praise, even though the praise is not sincere. The benefit of this research is to know that in daily communication, phatic speech acts could be implemented for smooth communication. The aim of implementing phatic speech acts is to build good communication between the speaker and the hearer. In addition, phatic speech acts are effective in avoiding conflicts and misunderstandings in the communication process.

Failure of masculinity is the behavior of a man who fails to show the biological side of his masculinity by being irresponsible, not having a leadership spirit, and experiencing homosexuality. Therefore, the embodiment of the failure of masculinity occurs in the four male characters in the movie entitled A Raisin in the Sun. The objectives to be achieved in this research are: (1) To analyze the failure of masculinity experienced by four male characters including Walter Lee, George Murchison, Joseph Asagai, and Carl Lindner in the movie entitled “A Raisin in the Sun”. (2) To analyze the impact of the failure of masculinity experienced by four male characters on themselves in the movie “A Raisin in the Sun”. The data source for this research is a movie entitled A Raisin in the Sun which is based on a drama by Lorraine Hansberry. This research data was collected by watching movies, looking for subtitles or transcripts, observing transcripts that discuss masculinity failures, identifying data on masculinity failures in the form of hegemonic masculinity, subordinate masculinity, complex masculinity, and marginal masculinity, coding data from transcripts, and finally analyzing masculinity failures. including hegemony, subordinate, complex, and marginal in the data and what the impact of the failure of masculinity is. In this research, the author uses the theory of patriarchy and masculinity. Then use psychological and sociological approaches to analyze the data. Then, research uses the internet as a means to find concepts of masculinity data that are linked to qualitative methods. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods including phrases, clauses, words and sentences. The results of the research found a failure of masculinity in four male characters, including Walter Lee, George Murchison, Joseph Asagai, and Carl Lindner. Second, researchers found the effects of failed masculinity on Walter Lee’s character, including depression, emotional suppression, feeling lonely and lying in the film entitled A Raisin in the Sun.

The Hunger Games is a trilogy of novels that were made into movies. The Hunger Games are related to social life, such as class conflict and materialism, this is interesting to examine in literary criticism using a Marxist approach. Literary criticism has many approaches, one of which is Marxism. Marxism is an ideology based on the views of Karl Marx. The topic of this research is Marx’s materialism in the movies entitled Hunger Games trilogy. This research analyzes materialism related to class conflict, there are two class conflicts, namely, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. This research focuses on two problems, namely, (1) the depiction of the bourgeoisie and proletariat in the movie Hunger Games sequel and (2) the effect of being bourgeoisie and proletariat toward the main characters. This research uses the theory of Marx (1998). This research uses two approaches to literary criticism, namely, Marxist and sociological approaches. These two approaches were used to analyze the data. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. The data in this thesis takes the form of words, sentences, phrases, and clauses relating to the bourgeoisie and proletariat in the Hunger Games trilogy movies. The author will answer the problems in the research. The results of the research found a depiction of the bourgeoisie as having power, wealth, and leadership. Meanwhile, the proletariat is a laborer or worker, poor, and has no power. This research finds the effects of being a bourgeoisie, namely, being powerful and oppressor while the proletariat becomes obedient and oppressed. Therefore, the aim of this research is that readers can learn about Marxism, especially about materialism related to class conflict namely, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat.

This research aims to describe fashion and feminism in the film The Devil Wears Prada. This research aims to understand the picture of fashion in the world of work and explain the lifestyle changes experienced by the female character, Andy. This research analyzes fashion can express self-confidence and even social class. In this research, the researcher uses Ebunoluwa’s theory about feminism. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The research method also uses two approaches, the feminist and sociological approaches. The results of the analysis show that fashion is depicted as an important thing in the film The Devil Wears Prada and the impact of Andy’s change into a fashionable woman. Fashion in this film can show a person’s values and social class. Andy’s new appearance is also balanced by her ability to fulfill all of Miranda’s job demands, which she can do perfectly. So not only has her appearance changed, but Andy is also more competent in her job.

Literasi masih menjadi topik yang menggema di dunia terutama dalam lingkup pendidikan. Berbagai upaya dilakukan oleh pemerintah untuk mewujudkan program tersebut salah satunya melalui Gerakan Literasi Sekolah. Untuk mendukung program tersebut, perlu dilakukan upaya untuk meningkatkan motivasi berliterasi anak. Salah satu upaya yang dilakukan adalah dengan pengembangan buku cerita yang menarik minat siswa. Selain untuk meningkatkan minat baca, buku cerita bisa dijadikan sebagai sarana pendidikan karakter. Melalui cerita yang disajikan, siswa bisa belajar yang yang konkret yang dialami. Selama ini, buku yang disajikan belum banyak yang memuat nilai-nilai yang dapat dipetik siswa, sehingga perlu adanya pengembangan buku cerita bagi anak yang berbasis sosio budaya Upaya pemertahanan budaya lokal dan sosial dibangun diwujudkan dalam Profil Pelajar Pancasila. Pengembangan nilai profil pelajar pancasila harus dimulai dari anak usia dini. Hal ini bertujuan agar tertanamnya nilai-nilai dan konsep dasar profil pelajar pancasila pada siswa sekolah dasar, sehingga siswa dapat mengimplementasikanya dalam kehidupan sehari-hari terutama dalam mewujudkan sikap berkebhinekaan global dan gotong royong yang merupakan bagian dari pemertahanan budaya lokal dan sosial. Selain itu, buku cerita anak dirasa efektif digunakan untuk mengajarkan muatan-muatan pembelajaran yang ada kepada siswa. Belajar menggunakan buku cerita anak juga lebih sesuai dengan karakteristik anak usia SD yang berada dalam tahap operasional konkret. Dalam cerita, siswa akan berhadapan dengan suatu kisah yang dapat dihubungkan langsung dengan kehidupan atau pengalamannya di dunia nyata. Nilai-nilai dan materi pembelajaran dapat diungkap dengan memanfaatkan lakon, latar, atau jalan cerita yang ada di dalamnya. Dengan adanya penelitian pengembangan buku cerita ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi positif bagi perkembangan literasi dan karakter siswa. Mengembangkan buku cerita yang bermuatan sosio-budaya merupakan tujuan dari penelitian ini, sehingga hasil penelitian ini dikemas dalam bentuk buku cerita yang dapat digunakan oleh sekolah-sekolah. Luaran yang dihasilkan dari penelitian ini adalah publikasi pada jurnal nasional terakreditasi.
